Those Damn Yankees
So I watched the Yankees blow opportunity after opportunity last night as they dropped game 4 of the division series to Cleveland. Another disappointing end to a frustrating season.
Anyone who has talked baseball with me over the past several years knows how I feel about the current state of the Yankees. Joe Torre is not the guy that should be managing the team. I never thought he was the guy for the job. He came on and inherited a team with a winning attitude and a hunger. Bucky Schowalter did all the hard work and Joe Torre took all the credit, that is until the base of that team that Buck had put together left the Yankees for one reason or another. Once that core group of players left the team the Yankees stopped winning. Proving that, regardless of the illusion, Torre was not the driving force behind the championships between 1996 and 2000.
I won’t go into my tirade on how Torre had a penchant for relying “veterans” who were past their prime (Clemens’ start in game 3, anyone). Or how he made tactical blunder after tactical blunder (how do you not ask a guy batting .250 to lay down a bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs?). Suffice to say I am hoping for a new blood to come in and manage the Yankees to new wins. It’s been a long time since our last World Series victory.
Are you listening Joe Girardi?
